Okefenokee Swamp

Over the Thanksgiving holiday my family took a little day trip to the Okefenokee Swamp in southeast Georgia.  It was a gorgeous day to enjoy the outdoors, and see a few flowers and a little fall color from the boat.  And yes, there were lots of alligators enjoying the sunshine too!

I didn’t realize that 75% of the 402,000 acre swamp – which is actually a peat bog, burned in the spring and summer due to lightening strikes.  The amazing thing is how quickly the plants were growing back.  Unfortunately the boardwalk and observation tower which burned down was not so resilient. Hopefully it will be rebuilt as I’d love to see a birds eye view of the islands, lakes, canals and marsh that make up the swamp.

Old Town Alexandria VA Photographer – Kristin

Headshots don’t have to be boring.  The tightly cropped headshot on a plain background has it’s uses, but an outdoor portrait shoot can show a lot more personality and be a lot more fun! Kristin needed new headshots for her business and we thought going to Old Town Alexandria would be the perfect setting for her photographs.  There’s so much color and texture to use, and a waiting poodle was kind enough to model for a cute shot.  As a photographer, it’s always a treat work with one person and really make them shine. So, without further ado, here is the beautiful Kristin.

U.S. Botanic Garden – holiday train exhibit

This year’s holiday exhibit at the US Botanic Gardens, created by applied imagination, is extra cute and creative.  The largest part of the train exhibit “Who Lives Here?” features cleverly named houses that resemble animals.  The second part is models of Presidential homes.  It’s amazing to see such detail created completely from materials found in nature.  applied imagination sets up displays at gardens all over the country, so even if you can’t see the display in DC, there may be one near you.

Published – Autumn River Farm Garden Wedding

Karen and Paul had the most beautiful fall garden wedding at River Farm last year, and I so enjoyed seeing their pictures again, along with Karen’s thoughts on the day.  Their wedding was recently featured on the Washington DC wedding blog United With Love.  Megan and Laura of Events in the City worked so hard to elaborate on Karen and Paul’s ideas to make it a classy yet fun theme, with a nod to the season.  My favorite detail was the real red apples that held the escort cards.  And to top off an amazing day was a  sunsets to rival all sunsets.  You can see the dramatic silhouette wedding portrait at the end of the post.  Click here to see the full story.

Thanks Ally and United with Love for the feature!

Washington DC Maternity Photos – Elizabeth

The final fall photoshoot of the year was for the beautiful Elizabeth, her husband and baby arriving soon! Elizabeth is a great wedding planner and coordinator with Cherry Blossom Weddings and Events, and has created beautiful weddings that I’ve been privileged to photograph.  I’ve enjoyed working with her, and getting getting to know her over the years, and am so excited for  her as she ventures into mommyhood. Here are a couple of shots from the fall maternity photo shoot.

P.S.  I just found out that Findley Katherine couldn’t wait any longer to make her appearance and arrived on Sunday!  Congratulations!
