Why am I a wedding photographer?

“I never wanted to forget the emotion I felt on our wedding day, and Jan captured just that.” ~ Jenn

That’s why.

Marriage is a journey, and it’s important to remember why you chose to start.  A picture can bring back that feeling faster than 1,000 words.

What makes a finished picture? Behind the scenes look at the process.

Unless you’re a professional photographer, I’m sure it’s a bit of a mystery what happens to pictures – if anything – between the camera and a framed portrait on your wall.

Today, a professional photographer is the lab, the retoucher and sometimes the printer too.  Digital photography certainly allows more creative control over each image, but adds layers of software and talent previously not required of photographers.

A camera in every phone with lots of filters to play with, and pictures plastered over social media also further blurs the line between professional photography and a snapshot.

Most photographers that call themselves professionals have mastered the many processes necessary to take an ordinary image and make it a work of art worthy of your walls.

** And every image taken by any photographer, professional or not, is automatically copyrighted to that person, so it’s important to respect the copyright and not copy or alter anyone else’s images without their permission.

To give you a glimpse into some of the steps that go into a finished image, I’m now including a look behind the scenes with most of my blog posts (so be sure to read all the way to the bottom!).  I get questions all the time about retouching, so hopefully this shows the difference those finishing steps make to an image.

Ideally an image comes out of camera with a good exposure, but then Lightroom is required to adjust everything from color temperature to highlights, shadows, contrast and more adjustments.  The files are then converted from RAW to JPEG and this is the proof stage.

Next is retouching for ordered images, making colors really pop, or making the image black and white, smoothing skin, dodging and burning (making areas of the image lighter or darker), etc..

The final step is printing.  Using a professional lab (available to professional photographers) means the colors will be accurate and the paper will last for generations.  Professional photographers also have access to many unique ways to display your art like deep matte paper, metallic paper, velvet art paper, gallery wrapped canvas, canvas block, printing on wood or metal, books, albums, folios, custom framing and more.

It’s fun to view and share images on-line, but it’s not until a tangible print is in the hands of a client, that a photographer’s work is done.

With the baby’s picture below, I thought the background was improved with the use of a texture.  Not something I use often, but it really enhanced the image as a final step.  Retouching really is done individually with a vision in mind for perfecting each image.

Maryland Maternity Family Photos – Waiting for Baby Girl

Isn’t B the most gorgeous mommy?  I enjoyed photographing this beautiful family who is adding a baby girl! She is already so loved and adored!  I’m so glad her husband talked B into capturing this special time.   Not only will the family treasure these images, but baby girl will as well!  And yes, after the fact, B was very glad she agreed to preserve in pictures this moment of family history as they excitedly await their baby girl’s arrival.

Another peak into the process.  I set up a studio backdrop in their dinning room next to a large window, but the seamless paper wasn’t wide enough for a full length shot.  But that’s OK.  In Lightroom I adjusted the color temperature, cropping, shadows, highlights, etc.  Then photoshop can take care of the background.  And B looks so regal and classic in black and white, I really liked the feel of it for this image.

River Farm Spring Wedding – Congratulations Courtney and Chris!

Courtney and Chris were marred on a sunny turned stormy wedding day at River Farm.  Courtney loves trees (as do I!) and so it was natural to display her gorgeous gown in one of the historic trees.  Their ceremony was held under the Osage Orange tree – a tree that was a gift from Thomas Jefferson to George Washington.   It was such a special day, see lots of pictures and more details about their day below.  Congratulations Courtney and Chris, it’s been a pleasure to work with you both and an honor to document your wedding day!

The sparkle of her one of a kind gown and the pop of the flowers matched the radiant smile Courtney had on her face all day.

Before the sprinkles turned to a torrential downpour we raced out to the gardens for a few sweet portraits.  I’m so thankful they were game even if they got a tad wet!  (I should also thank wedding coordinator Stephanie for holding my umbrella and Courtney’s veil and flowers, and for my assistant Lauren who stood in the rain to hold the off camera flash. It takes a great team willing to do anything and they are the best!)

The rings are posed on corn shuck flowers that were used as the centerpieces.  They were made in East Tennessee where Courtney grew up.

I love catching couples looking at each other during the wedding day.  Seeing this image will always remind Courtney and Chris of how they were feeling on their wedding day.

The first dance was beautifully choreographed.  And seemed fitting to the era of George Washington (River Farm was part of George Washington’s farmland).

Bubbles do show up in the dark and make for a fun sendoff!

An example of how an image is created.  It was raining and dark and I was using off camera flash to make up for the lack of natural light.  In this image, the flash didn’t fire and the image has only available light, the light filtering through the umbrella from above.  The strong highlights and shadows meant I knew this image would be perfect as a black and white. It’s very pretty in color, but black and white really adds to the emotional impact of the moment. So romantic!
